The UNschool is theme and project oriented, with the projects chosen organically by the students (See ORGANIC CURRICULUM.) Students move at their own pace, choosing from a menu of overarching themes suggested by themselves, me and (if desired) their parent. As facilitator & teacher, I use guided thoughtful inquiry to help kids make sure they are thinking fully and deeply about the skills they will need to acquire and/or use in the service of that project. The Freedom to Grow (UN)School offers an innovative education alternative to Athens, GA for children K - 8. We believe in a holistic approach to education, one in which the joy of learning and personal success of the individual are given top priority. We don't believe that learning begins and ends with a school bell. We are all learning and expanding our knowledge base all the time, whether we are exploring, thinking, or playing. Our UNschool is committed to honoring this truth.
Please call or email for more details or for an application! Should registration become full, we will be maintaining a waiting list.
The Freedom to Grow (UN)School will be operating as a homeschooling community learning center for full and part-time students. Parents of students will be expected to register their child as homeschooled with the state, with myself listed as tutor. This is a very easy process, and all the necessary documents and administration of required testing will be provided (consult the website at the hyperlink below for more information.)
assessed via an ongoing portfolio collaboratively compiled by student and teacher.
The focus of our days is twofold: learning what each needs to learn for him or herself, while also learning how to interact successfully with others. The children experience freedom to think, to self-regulate and self-organize, and to move on their own. Democratic processes and consensus building are used when making group decisions. Students also acquire skills in working cooperatively, and in using tools like conflict resolution and restorative justice to help them navigate the tricky waters of working in and with a group.
We are outside often - gardening, playing, taking walks, studying nature - and use our community resources (libraries, government buildings, parks, theaters, museums, etc ) as often as we can.
Our goal is to help your child become the most joyful and purposeful person they can be!
